Developing a Love of Reading
At Child’s Voice, we assess our students using Fountas and Pinnell, which is an A-Z leveling system. Reading level is a tool used to gauge where a student is reading independently. Knowing at which level a child is reading is important to help encourage them to read on their own without losing interest.
If a book is too hard, your child may become frustrated and discouraged; a book that’s too easy is boring. Matching your child’s Reading Level to the most appropriate yet, challenging books is key to developing excitement around reading. The best way to grow as a reader is by reading text that’s not too hard and not too easy, or what teachers call the “independent” reading level.
Be sure to read to your child everyday – especially over the summer months. The single best way to avoid losing ground on reading ability during the “Summer Slide” is by reading each and every day! Here are some additional resources about reading levels.
