May is Better Hearing & Speech Month
At Child’s Voice, we are experts at what we do. We teach infants through lower elementary aged children with hearing loss how to listen and speak. We are extremely good at doing this. On May 17th, 11 of our students graduated! Yes, the graduates wore caps and gowns! The 11 students received diplomas! The 11 students also gave speeches! In addition, the entire school performed songs. Everyone sang. In fact, we even had a song the parents learned to sing along with us.
This activity in May is typical in all preschool programs (except for the speeches probably). However, we are very different, all our students needed first to learn how to listen in order to learn to sing and to give speeches. That is a big difference from a typical preschool graduation ceremony!
In addition to graduation ceremonies taking place in May, it so happens, May is Better Hearing & Speech Month. BHSM provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) much like Child’s Voice, in providing life-altering treatment.
During this month, Child’s Voice has been celebrating the work we do with our “Spotlight Saturday” blogs and social media posts. We have highlighted the work done in our Audiology Center, Early Intervention Program, School Program and by our Administrative Support team. These Programs all work together to provide the best services possible for our children with hearing loss and their families. We seek to deliver our mission: To empower children with hearing loss to be successful in all educational and social settings by optimizing their listening, speaking and academic skills.
If you have a child with hearing loss, and not attending Child’s Voice or who is already in the mainstream, there are some things you can do to set your child up for success in the school setting (according to the ASHA):
- Know your child’s rights
- Maximize achievement
- Champion classroom technology
- Encourage effective teaching strategies
- Educate others about noisy classrooms.
To learn more come see us. Be careful though, we might teach you a song to sing!
